US-China Trade Agreement’s MoU’s Could Funnel In-Display Biometric Tech to Mobile Brands

US-China Trade Agreement's MoU's Could Funnel In-Display Biometric Tech to Mobile Brands

Three major smartphone companies have signed non-binding memoranda of understanding (MoU) agreements to purchase 12 billion dollars’ worth of Qualcomm technology over the next three years.

The agreements were signed as part of a larger bilateral trade initiative undertaken upon President Donald Trump’s visit to China. Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the heads of Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo attended a ceremony at which the agreement was signed.

In a statement announcing its own $4 billion MoU with Qualcomm, Vivo indicated that it plans to leverage the latter’s technology in the areas of mobile photography, power efficiency, and gaming, among others; meanwhile, Vivo will share its expertise in user experience with respect to Qualcomm’s development of 5G System on Chip technologies.

Vivo also emphasized its collaboration with Qualcomm on in-display fingerprint sensor technology, with modified Vivo devices having been used by Qualcomm to demonstrate its ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The technology could be a hot commodity if mobile makers opt for in-display fingerprint authentication to get a competitive edge against the splashy new infrared facial recognition system of Apple’s new iPhone X, and now that Qualcomm has also established MoUs with Xiaomi and OPPO, the technology may find its way into a number of future devices from these brands.

Meanwhile, Vivo, at least, says its work with Qualcomm on biometrics extends beyond fingerprint recognition, with the companies setting their sights on “3D facial identification, palm prints… iris scanning and other biometric technologies” for mobile devices.
