Xiaomi sold 2.12 million of its smartphones in just 12 hours, earning a Guinness World Record for the feat, according to an AndroidAuthority article by Jimmy Westenberg.
The huge sales were promoted with a number of discounts on the company’s mobile devices as part of its Mi Fan Festival celebrating the Xaomi’s fifth anniversary. They brought in revenue of about $335 million USD from the sales, which also included accessories and related products such as Mi TVs and Mi Bands. It was likely a satisfying cap to a very strong year for the company, which saw its debut in the Malaysian and Indonesian markets, as well as in India, where it launched its Redmi Note smartphone last November. Globally, it sold about 61 million smartphones in 2014, becoming the third-biggest smartphone maker in the world, right behind Apple and Samsung.
That’s not to say the horizon is perfectly bright for the company. At the end of 2014, it ran into some legal trouble over its patents and was summarily blocked from continuing to sell its smartphones in India. The company went on to release a new device this year called the Mi Box Mini, which is somewhat like an Android TV, supporting digital streaming of media content as well as video games. That could signal a tentative pivot away from the smartphone market on the company’s part, or simply an expansion in its range of business endeavours. In any case, with its record Mi Fan Festival sales, the company has good reason to celebrate its birthday now.
