“Our vision for a decentralized future, self-sovereign identity, data and payment, facilitated by blockchain technology, works well with the identity verification services Onfido offers.” – Alastair Johnson, CEO, Nuggets
Nuggets, the provider of a blockchain-based digital identity and payments platform, has embraced Onfido‘s selfie-based approach to customer authentication.
The latter’s approach to identity verification revolves around facial recognition and document reading technologies, matching end users’ selfie photos to their government-issued ID. It would seem to be a natural fit for Nuggets, whose identity and payments platform puts a strong emphasis on user privacy by relying primarily on biometric authentication rather than biographic identifiers; accordingly, Nuggets is now using Onfido’s technology for user verification.
“It’s great to join forces with Onfido,” commented Nuggets CEO Alastair Johnson in a statement announcing the strategic partnership. “Our vision for a decentralized future, self-sovereign identity, data and payment, facilitated by blockchain technology, works well with the identity verification services Onfido offers.”
It’s another indication of Onfido’s rising profile as a provider of selfie-driven biometric authentication solutions, with the company having recently announced its involvement in a pilot project for a UK-based digital identity program just a few weeks ago.
Likewise, for Nuggets, the partnership represents another step forward in the evolution of its technological platform, which is starting to garner some serious acclaim. Nuggets has been nominated across five categories in this year’s Payments Awards, including in the categories of “Best Online Payments Solution – Consumer”, and “Best Use of Biometrics”.

Like all biometrics solutions, face recognition technology measures and matches the unique characteristics for the purposes of identification or authentication. Often leveraging a digital or connected camera, facial recognition software can detect faces in images, quantify their features, and then match them against stored templates in a database.
Face scanning biometric tech is incredibly versatile and this is reflected in its wide range of potential applications. Learn more on Mobile ID World’s Facial Recognition page.
