A new biometric system uses cardiac signals for continuous authentication. Called HeartSignature, the offering comes by way of Olea Sensor Networks.
In a press release, Olea said the system can “accurately and continuously identify individuals with precision comparable to existing biometric authentication systems.” The key word is “continuously”; it’s a passive authentication system that could prove ideal as an extra layer of security on top of other authentication systems. Biometric data is collected through Olea’s proprietary OS-3001 Intelligent Multi-Sensor Platform, operated through a smartphone-sized device wearable/handheld device. The system can be used with Olea’s sensor analytics software alone or it can be used with the company’s IoT Intelligent Partitioning Architecture.
Olea suggests that HeartSignature could be ideal for applications in “high-security, consumer, government and commercial markets”, and that the technology could even be used in connected smart cars and with smartphones. Given the enormous potential of the burgeoning Internet of Things, such positioning could garner a great deal of interest in the cardiac biometrics product. In any case, demand for these kinds of passive authentication systems appears to be growing as organizations begin to realize the complexity of the digital security landscape.
