Delta has brought its Digital ID solution for passenger processing to Los Angeles and New York, with the complete roster of participating airports now including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), and Detroit Metro Airport (DTW).
The solution was first debuted in 2021, at the Atlanta and Detroit airports. It enables passengers to set up a digital ID in the Fly Delta mobile app that is linked to their face biometrics. That, in turn, lets them check bags and pass through security screening without the need to present physical ID. Instead, facial recognition is used to identify the registered passenger at any such touchpoints.
In order to enroll in the program, travelers must have shared their passport information and Known Traveler Number with Delta, and must be signed up for TSA PreCheck, the Transportation Security Administration’s expedited screening program for travelers. Membership in SkyMiles, Delta’s free frequent-flyer program, is also required.
In return, passengers will have access to a streamlined airport experience. Delta says that on average the system reduces the time needed for bag drop from two minutes to 30 seconds, and that it has resulted in substantial upticks in passenger satisfaction ratings with respect to their check-in and security experiences.
Further expansions are planned. Delta says that travelers will be able to use the Digital ID at Atlanta’s international terminal “as soon as January,” and that it is looking “to expand the technology to additional hubs in 2024”.
Delta’s efforts are part of a broader trend, with Alaska Airlines having launched its own Digital Identity app – which also leverages facial recognition technology – this past summer.
