Digital ID and Payment Tech Dominate in This Week's Mobile ID News Roundup

This week’s roundup of Mobile ID World’s most popular stories shows a strong appetite for digital ID and payment technology news among readers.

On the digital ID front, this week brought the latest sign of the emergence of this technology in Canada. The Canadian Bankers Association publicly called for a federated national ID scheme that would link various government-issued documents, such as driver’s licenses and health cards, as well as payment information and fingerprint and face biometrics. The organization made its case in a White Paper titled “Canada’s Digital ID Future – A Federated Approach”:

Further south, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles made some news with its plans for an official launch of a mobile driver’s license program. That having been said, some obstacles still stand in the way, including the fact that the state’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau hasn’t yet given the green light to the use of mobile IDs:

Speaking of mobile identity verification, Aware, Inc. also got some attention thanks to its participation in the Mobile World Congress Barcelona trade show. The company was there to show off its Knomi solution, which uses mobile biometrics to enable remote onboarding and authentication. But Aware also stoked some interest with the hint that it would announced a new authentication product in the coming months:

As for payment technology, a new partnership between IDEMIA and Soft Space generated some reader interest this week with its focus on helping merchants to accept contactless payment through mobile technology. Essentially, the aim is to let merchants set up a smartphone or a tablet for use as a secure payment terminal:

…and a new report from Juniper Research predicts that biometric payment cards will be an important growth driver for the broader payment card market over the next few years. The market research firm anticipates that biometric card shipments will jump 850 percent between this year and 2026, whereas the revenue from payment card shipments overall will increase from $9.7 billion to $11.7 billion over the same period:
