Fitbit to Launch Smartwatch with NFC Payments Support

Fitbit is preparing to launch its first smartwatch device, and it’s going to feature a contactless payment system supported by Visa and Mastercard.

The device is called the Fitbit Ionic, and is available for preorder starting this week. It will feature the usual sensors found on Fitbit’s previous fitness tracking devices, including an accelerometer and GPS, as well as improved biometric capabilities including more accurate heart rate tracking and an infrared sensor designed to track blood oxygen levels, or SpO2. But it will also introduce new smartphone capabilities including support for third party apps including software from Starbucks and Pandora.

Its payment system could help it to really stand out, though. Like more popular mobile payment services, the Fitbit Ionic will use tokenization security for transmitting credit card information, and its NFC capability will allow users to make payments just by tapping the device at a compatible payment terminal.

The Fitbit Ionic will ship this October, and is priced at $299.95.
