Fingerprint Cards Sensor Embedded in Biometric Credit Card

South Korea-based card manufacturer Kona-i has launched a credit card with a built-in fingerprint sensor, and it features biometric technology from Fingerprint Cards and Precise Biometrics.

The latter’s Precise BioMatch Embedded provides the necessary algorithm software, while an FPC sensor has been embedded for fingerprint scanning. FPC hasn’t specified the fingerprint sensor being used, but it’s worth noting that a Kona-i smart card announced earlier this year featured an FPC1020 sensor.

The latest Kona-i development can be seen as an indication of continued progress on FPC’s part as the company seeks to more aggressively pursue the smart card market – part of an overall effort to expand beyond the mobile biometrics market that has been its mainstay. Meanwhile, the presence of Precise Biometrics’ algorithm software points to the persistence of the two companies’ strategic partnership, which has been a particularly fruitful one in the area of mobile integrations.

UPDATE: In a new statement clarifying the integration, Precise Biometrics asserted: “The card was launched yesterday at the trade show Money 20/20 in Las Vegas. Precise Biometrics clarifies that the launched credit card is not commercialized and that the integration therefore has no financial impact on the company. Precise Biometrics AB is obliged to make this information public pursuant to the EU Market Abuse Regulation.”
