FPC’s Newest Sensor to Increase Smartphone Market Penetration

June 26, 2018

“FPC’s latest sensor model is a single-chip solution that the company says is suitable for square or rounded rear-mounted applications, or in a rectangular home button on the front of a mobile device.”

FPC's Newest Sensor to Increase Smartphone Market PenetrationFingerprint Cards has announced its most affordable fingerprint sensor yet, the FPC1511.

The solution was first hinted at in FPC’s latest quarterly update, in which FPC CEO Christian Fredrikson said that the company is seeking to adapt to dropping ASPs in a highly competitive mobile fingerprint sensor market by focusing on the development of low cost offerings. FPC’s latest sensor model is a single-chip solution that the company says is suitable for square or rounded rear-mounted applications, or in a rectangular home button on the front of a mobile device.

In a statement announcing the solution, Fingerprint Cards proclaimed that the FPC1511 is its “most cost-optimized solution for smartphone manufacturers” to date. Elaborating further, FPC’s mobile business head, Ted Hansson, asserted, “We believe it will substantially increase the market penetration of fingerprint sensors in smartphones in 2019, due to its excellent biometric performance and cost-optimized design.”

FPC says it expects its new sensor model to reach full regulatory qualification in the third quarter of this year, and to make its way into commercial smartphones starting in late 2018 or early 2019. The solution should help FPC to retain its competitive edge in the saturated mobile market while the company simultaneously pursues new business areas, most notably in the emerging biometric payment cards market.
