Fingerprint Cards (FPC) has placed its side-mounted fingerprint sensor in a pair of new smartphones from Vinsmart. The Vsmart Aris and the Vsmart Aris Pro will both use the company’s FPC1540 to enable biometric authentication for Vinsmart customers.
Vinsmart is the smartphone subsidiary of Vietnam’s Vin Group Joint Stock Company. The Aris and the Aris Pro are the first smartphones the company has released with FPC technology. The FPC1540 sensor was unveiled in November of 2019, and made its first appearance in the Xiaomi Redmi K30 less than one month later. The sensor has since appeared in the Infinix Note 7 Lite.
According to FPC, the FPC1540 was originally developed with an eye towards foldable phones, though the thin design has proven to be well-suited for a range of mobile form factors. The company has noted that COVID-19 has generated more interest in contactless technologies, and believes that fingerprint sensors in non-shared devices could satisfy that demand.
The Vin Group, meanwhile, has responded to the pandemic with facial recognition technology that can recognize people wearing masks. The technology is developed by the company’s VinAI Research subsidiary, which has indicated that it is working with Vinsmart to integrate the technology into Vinsmart devices.
