FPC1035 Sensor Embedded in Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus

September 28, 2016

Fingerprint Cards and Precise Biometrics technologies are once again being used in a new Xiaomi smartphone — but this isn’t just any regular integration.

FPC1035 Sensor Embedded in Xiaomi Mi 5s PlusWhile Xiaomi’s Mi 5s Plus device features an FPC1035 fingerprint sensor—the same model that has been used in a number of other mobile devices—it has evidently been embedded under the glass display of the device, according to new reports from TechCrunch and The Verge. That theoretically allows Xiaomi to boast of a button-free design for its new devices, though images of the smartphones indicate that they still feature a button-like indentation under their display screens. The under-glass integration is made possible by the 3D imaging capability that has long been a staple of FPC touch sensor tech.

The move to under-glass fingerprint sensing validates rumors that arose earlier this month, and is the attainment of an ambition held by other major OEMs such as LG, which has also been exploring under-glass sensor technology. And together with the new smartphone’s use of dual rear-facing cameras for better photography, like the configuration used in Apple’s new iPhones, the technology may also suggest an ambition on Xiaomi’s part to become a true top-tier smartphone maker—though its new devices will reflect mid-range prices at roughly $299 and $345 respectively.

The Mi 5s Plus is slated for launch in China on September 29th.
