Genesis GV70 Will Let Drivers Start Car with Biometric Fingerprint Recognition

November 27, 2020

The newest version of the Genesis GV70 will reportedly use fingerprint recognition to deliver a slew of smart driving features. Owners will find the in-car fingerprint sensor directly beneath the Stop/Start button inside the vehicle.

Genesis GV70 Will Let Drivers Start Car with Biometric Fingerprint Recognition

The technology will allow the 2022 GV70 to link someone’s fingerprint with their driver profile. When the driver touches the sensor, the car will recall (and restore) driver settings like the seat position and the speaker volume, and bring up recent navigation data. Since everything is fingerprint-based, the feature is also compatible with the Genesis Connected App, allowing owners to unlock their car and start the engine with a fingerprint scan on their mobile phone.

Drivers will similarly be able to use their fingerprint to authorize purchases (including gas and parking) made through the Genesis CarPay platform. Meanwhile, the GV70 will switch to Valet Mode when it does not recognize the person sitting behind the wheel. Valet Mode will remove personal information (such as a phonebook or a home address) from the infotainment display, allowing other people to drive the car while still ensuring the privacy of the owner.

In addition to the fingerprint sensor, the GV70 will have an ultra-sensitive radar sensor to monitor activity in the rear seat. According to Genesis, the radar is more sensitive than an ultrasonic sensor, and can purportedly detect the heartbeat of a sleeping infant through clothes and blankets.

Of course, the Genesis GV70 is not the first smart car with a fingerprint scanner. Hyundai installed a sensor in its Santa Fe SUV in 2018, while Mercedes integrated one into the design of the latest S-Class and Lynk & Co placed a Goodix sensor in the Lynk & Co 05.

Goode Intelligence and Grand View Research have both predicted that the demand for in-car biometrics will go up dramatically in the next few years.
