Google Wallet’s digital driver’s license storage feature is now available in select U.S. states, offering Android users a secure digital alternative to physical identification documents. The service has launched in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico as of March 2025, joining the growing ecosystem of mobile driver’s licenses expanding across the United States.
The verification process follows ISO 18013-5 standards for mobile driving licenses. Users must access the Google Wallet app on their Android device and navigate to the “Add to Google Wallet” option. After selecting “ID” and “Driver’s License,” they proceed through a multi-step verification process that includes scanning both sides of their physical license and providing facial photographs for identity confirmation.
Google has implemented robust security measures to protect users’ digital identification documents. The system uses end-to-end encryption and personal authentication protocols to secure stored credentials, similar to the security standards used in TSA-approved mobile ID systems. In cases where devices are lost or stolen, users can remotely delete their digital ID to prevent unauthorized access.
The digital driver’s license feature integrates with Google Wallet’s broader document storage capabilities, which include support for boarding passes, event tickets, health insurance cards, and COVID-19 vaccination records. The integration provides users with a centralized platform for managing various forms of digital identification and documentation, following similar implementations by Apple Wallet, which has already expanded to ten U.S. jurisdictions.
While initial reports suggested Samsung Wallet did not include digital driver’s license storage capabilities, recent developments show the platform has actually made significant progress in this area, with successful implementations in several states including West Virginia and Georgia through partnerships with IDEMIA Public Security North America.
The expansion of mobile driver’s licenses across different wallet platforms represents a significant step forward in digital identity adoption, with states increasingly embracing these technologies to enhance convenience and security for their residents while maintaining compliance with federal and international standards for digital identification.
