A comprehensive new report from HID reveals significant shifts in security industry trends, with mobile credentials, biometrics, and artificial intelligence emerging as key drivers of transformation. The study, which gathered insights from 1,800 industry professionals worldwide, identifies several major developments shaping the security landscape in 2025. The latest research builds upon HID’s previous forecasts that predicted the widespread adoption of mobile-based digital IDs.
Mobile credentials have seen substantial growth, with nearly two-thirds of organizations either implementing or planning to implement these solutions. The proliferation of mobile credentials has been identified as a top trend by 61 percent of security leaders, indicating a marked shift away from traditional access methods. The trend is exemplified by HID’s recent expansion of its mobile credential ecosystem through integration with Google Wallet and the development of new reader technologies.
Biometric technologies continue to gain traction, with approximately 35 percent of organizations currently using solutions such as fingerprint, iris, and facial recognition. An additional 13 percent of respondents indicate plans to adopt biometric technologies, suggesting continued growth in this sector. HID has demonstrated leadership in this area, with its Lumidigm V-Series fingerprint readers achieving ISO/IEC 30107-3 compliance for presentation attack detection.
The integration of artificial intelligence in security operations has become increasingly prevalent, with organizations reporting improved operational efficiency (50 percent) and enhanced real-time data analysis (47 percent) as primary benefits. AI-driven solutions are streamlining various aspects of security, including identity management, video surveillance, and access control.
The report highlights a strong trend toward unified security management, with 73 percent of organizations considering the unification of security functions as either “somewhat” or “very important,” according to the findings. Additionally, 67 percent of security leaders are moving toward software-driven security solutions, emphasizing the importance of integrating multiple data collection methodologies.
Interoperability remains a crucial consideration, with more than half of security professionals ranking open platforms as “extremely” or “very important.” The preference reflects the growing need for seamless integration between different security systems and solutions, as demonstrated by successful implementations like Sacramento International Airport’s mobile driver’s license verification system.
The convergence of physical and digital security solutions continues to accelerate, with nearly two-thirds of organizations reporting the adoption of unified platforms that integrate video surveillance, access control, and intrusion detection. The development matches HID’s work on its Seos credentialing technology, which bridges physical and digital access control.
Sustainability has emerged as a significant factor in security investment decisions, with 75 percent of security leaders now considering environmental impact in their solution selection process. However, cost-effectiveness and security capabilities remain the primary considerations for 80 percent of integrators and consultants.
