Huawei Mate 20 Pro to Feature In-Display Fingerprint Scanning: Leaks

August 2, 2018

A growing body of evidence suggests that Huawei is going to stick with in-display fingerprint sensor technology for at least one of its upcoming flagship smartphones.Huawei Mate 20 Pro to Feature In-Display Fingerprint Scanning: Leaks

Part of the evidence comes by way of a leaker posting on the Chinese social media site Weibo. Purporting to feature an image of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the leaker also asserts that the device will feature an in-display fingerprint scanner – a claim that aligns with the image of an almost bezelless, large-screen mobile device. Meanwhile, XDA-Developers claims it has got its hands on firmware files indicating the same thing – that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro will have an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Huawei became one of the pioneering smartphone makers to introduce in-display fingerprint sensor technology to consumers earlier this year with its Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS smartphone, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the company bringing this functionality to the premium version of its upcoming Mate 20 device. As for its supplier, it was Goodix that brought in-display technology to the Porsche Design Mate RS; but a more recent device featured an under-glass fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm, which has claimed that its ultrasonic sensor technology can also be used for in-display implementations. That could point the way to Qualcomm being Huawei’s supplier for the Mate 20 Pro.

Other features anticipated for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, based on these recent leaks, include a triple-camera system featuring a 42MP main sensor, and a HiSilicon Kirin 980 system-on-chip processor. But with the new devices not expected to launch for a couple of months, it could be a little while before these details are confirmed.
