Idemia has successfully completed a field test for West Virginia’s upcoming Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) program. Conducted in collaboration with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), this milestone signifies a significant step toward the official launch of the state’s digital ID solution.
The mobile driver’s license will allow West Virginia residents to carry a secure, digital version of their driver’s license on their smartphones, enhancing convenience and security.
The mDL utilizes biometric technology, specifically selfie-based facial recognition, during the onboarding process. Users are prompted to take a selfie, which is then compared to the photo on their physical driver’s license for identity verification. This method ensures a high level of security by confirming that the digital ID matches the individual’s official records.
West Virginia joins a growing list of states adopting mobile driver’s licenses based on Idemia’s technology, including Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Iowa, Mississippi, and New York.
Idemia’s efforts in mobile identification gained momentum in 2021 when its Mobile ID solution passed conformity assessments, paving the way for broader adoption across the United States. In partnership with Samsung in 2023, Idemia also integrated mDLs into the Samsung Wallet, further expanding accessibility.
The successful field test with the TSA indicates that the mDL meets federal security standards, potentially easing the process of identity verification at airports and other secure locations. Idemia’s Mobile ID Reader and Verify SDK have also received global industry certification, underscoring the company’s commitment to complying with international standards for mobile driving licenses.
The upcoming launch of West Virginia’s mDL program reflects a broader trend toward digital identities, offering residents a modern and secure alternative to physical identification documents.
