Microsoft has rolled out updates to Windows Hello in the latest Windows 11 Beta Channel preview build, enhancing the biometric authentication system with a new visual design and expanded passkey features. Windows Hello, which allows for authentication via facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, or PIN, now incorporates an updated interface for the sign-in screen, passkey verification, and Microsoft Store authentication dialogs.
The changes reflect a move toward passwordless authentication, aligning with the FIDO Alliance’s standards for passkeys, which use cryptographic key pairs to secure user credentials.
The revamped credential management system enables users to choose among various authentication methods and select preferred devices or passkeys for login. This update arrives as organizations increasingly recognize the limitations of traditional password-based security. Microsoft’s enhancements to Windows Hello are expected to improve identity protection, addressing concerns around credential theft and fraud that have grown significantly in recent years.
In addition to authentication updates, the preview build (22635.4440) addresses several system stability issues and temporarily disables a new game controller keyboard feature due to technical difficulties.
The improvements are currently available to Windows Insider Program participants for testing and feedback, with broader deployment anticipated in future Windows 11 updates.
