LG has unveiled four new smartphones and a smartwatch at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The new smartphones are mid-range devices, while the smartwatch is meant to resemble a luxury watch, reports Maurizio Pesce in an article for Wired.
Called the Watch Urbane, the smartwatch is an Android Wear device that comes in silver- or gold-coated metal and has a removable leather band. Its interface is a circular, 1.3-inch screen, it runs on a Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz quad-core processor, and it has a two-day battery life. It also features some biometric capabilities, able to measure things like users’ cardiac rates.
With this luxury smartwatch, the company clearly seems to be taking preemptive aim at Apple, whose Apple Watch will soon hit the market and is likely to be a big success. That device, like all Apple devices, is aimed at the higher end of the market, and it seems that it will probably feature some pretty advanced technology. It will be difficult for a company like LG to compete against that device on technology and features alone, so the company will probably aim at a lower price point for its own offering – though no pricing information has been announced yet.
The pricing of its new smartphones – the Magna, Leon, Spirit, and Joy – could be a hint though, and those are certainly aimed at the middle of the market, with price points under $250. These devices, each running Android Lollipop OS’s, are the kind of smartphones that are eating away at the bigger companies’ market share, and will almost certainly make a few more dents when they debut in Europe over the next little while.
