New Vivo Flagship to Feature Enhanced In-Display Fingerprint Scanning

August 20, 2018

“…with its integration of in-display fingerprint scanning in the X23, Vivo is continuing to drive what may be a growing trend in mobile biometrics, with other smartphone makers like Xiaomi also following suit.”

Vivo has officially announced its next flagship smartphone, and it’s going to feature improved in-display fingerprint recognition.New Vivo Flagship to Feature Enhanced In-Display Fingerprint Scanning

The device has only just been unveiled in teaser images on Vivo’s Chinese-language website, with full specifications yet to come. But certain key features are already being highlighted, including a large-size display facilitating a 91.2 percent screen-to-body ratio, which is facilitated by a ‘fourth generation’ in-display fingerprint sensor.

It isn’t yet clear who Vivo’s supplier is with respect to the biometric technology. Vivo became the first smartphone maker to launch a consumer device featuring in-display fingerprint scanning with its Vivo X20 Plus UD, which used a Synaptics Clear ID sensor. But its most recent flagship device, the Nex S, used in-display technology from China-based Goodix.

In any case, with its integration of in-display fingerprint scanning in the X23, Vivo is continuing to drive what may be a growing trend in mobile biometrics, with other smartphone makers like Xiaomi also following suit.

Vivo is also contributing to the much more unfortunate trend of abandoning logic in its branding, with the company having jumped from the X21 to the X23, just as Samsung went from the Note 5 to the Note7 and Apple went from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X.
