NEXT Announces PC-focused Fingerprint Sensor Solution

February 10, 2021

NEXT Announces PC-focused Fingerprint Sensor Solution

NEXT Biometrics has developed a new fingerprint sensor solution specifically for PCs, and has hopes for the offering, announcing that it will deliver increased revenue per sensor and possibly higher volumes.

The solution was developed in collaboration with Broadcom, and with funding support from one of NEXT’s “top tier PC OEM customers”, the company said in a statement. That OEM is planning to integrate the sensor into a next generation line of notebook devices.

The sensor meets Microsoft SecureBIO requirements, and NEXT explained that it expects the solution “to become mandatory for computer manufacturers world- wide as Microsoft launches their Modern PC protocol in second half 2021.”

Microsoft has shown a strong interest in bringing biometric authentication to PC users in recent years, thanks to its development of the Windows Hello authentication system in its Windows 10 operating system. Meanwhile, OEMs like Dell have shown a growing interest in supporting biometric authentication on their own devices.

Commenting further on the new NEXT solution, CEO Peter Heuman said there is “great interest” in the new sensor among NEXT customers, adding, “This development has changed the nature of our PC business.”

The announcement offers the latest indication that NEXT is off to a busy start in 2021. In January, the company revealed that it had signed a Letter of Intent to provide its One Touch ID Finger Print Module to India-based Pagaria Group, and last week brought the news that Credence ID had placed a volume order for FAP 20 fingerprint sensors from NEXT.
