“The company has not yet indicated which biometrics company is supplying the fingerprint sensor technology, though Goodix and Synaptics have emerged as the leading providers this year with their integrations into devices from Vivo and Huawei.”
OnePlus is poised to become the next major smartphone maker to implement in-display fingerprint scanning.
The Shenzhen-based company has confirmed that its forthcoming device, the OnePlus 6T, will feature the technology, called “Screen Unlock” in OnePlus’s branding.
The company has not yet indicated which biometrics company is supplying the fingerprint sensor technology, though Goodix and Synaptics have emerged as the leading providers this year with their integrations into devices from Vivo and Huawei. Silead, meanwhile, is the sensor supplier for the new OPPO R17 smartphone, with algorithm software provided by Precise Biometrics.
Confirming its plans to implement in-display fingerprint scanning in an email to CNET, OPPO explained, “By adding this feature as an addition to other display unlocking options such as Face Unlock, users will have options to unlock the display in a way that is most efficient for them.” It’s difficult to imagine a user who will find fingerprint scanning of any kind more convenient or efficient than Face Unlock, but OPPO’s addition of cutting-edge in display fingerprint scanning technology could help the company to burnish its credibility in biometric security after reports earlier this year indicating that its Face Unlock system could be fooled by a black-and-white photo of a user’s face.
The OnePlus 6T is expected to be released this October, with a price tag of around $550.
