“…the system can scan two fingerprints at once, allowing for potentially even greater security for end users.”
Having become one of last year’s pioneers in the new area of in-display fingerprint scanning, OPPO is promising an even more sophisticated version of this technology in at least one smartphone destined for launch this year.
At a media event, the company announced and demonstrated a new in-display (or “under-display”) fingerprint sensor system whose scanning area is 15 times larger than that of the OPPO R17. What’s more, the system can scan two fingerprints at once, allowing for potentially even greater security for end users.
As GSMArena notes, Dual finger scanning in an in-display sensor was previewed by another smartphone maker, Vivo, almost a year ago, but has yet to appear in a commercial device.
The showcase suggests that in-display fingerprint scanning will remain a key focus area for at least some smartphone brands after its introduction last year, even if Apple’s definitive switch to facial recognition for user authentication is helping to raise the profile of that modality in the mobile industry. And that’s good news for fingerprint biometrics specialists like Precise Biometrics, which provided the algorithm software for last year’s OPPO R17.
OPPO’s media event showcased the fingerprint sensor technology alongside a 10x optical zoom system, though the company did not indicate that the latter will arrive in new smartphones this year.
