“…it’s a striking development in the wake of recently announced partnerships with both Apple and Samsung, suggesting a kind of ‘frenemy’ relationship between the rivals.”
PayPal is working on a new app for in-store mobile payments, and Bank of America will be among its earliest supporters.
According to a statement announcing a new partnership between the companies, PayPal has a “forthcoming NFC mobile wallet experience” planned that will “enable in-store tap-to-pay purchases”. That suggests it will directly compete with pioneering mPayment platforms like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
For anyone who has been watching PayPal’s gradual incursion into the world of mPayments, the development will come as little surprise; nevertheless, it’s a striking development in the wake of recently announced partnerships with both Apple and Samsung, suggesting a kind of ‘frenemy’ relationship between the rivals.
It isn’t yet clear when PayPal’s mPayment app will emerge, but the companies’ statement promises “new experiences available to Bank of America customers in the first half of 2018”.
