News from the second annual Snapdragon Technology Summit held in Hawaii broke with the announcement that Qualcomm Technologies will work together with Baidu to optimize the latter’s DuerOS conversational AI system for smartphones on the Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform. This signals another advancement in the growth of voice-first assistance, furthering the ongoing conversation concerning the evolution of the human-machine relationship.
As part of a strategic partnering in AI technology, the agenda is to optimize DuerOS with Qualcomm Aqstic hardware and software to support a comprehensive AI voice and smart assistant for global smartphone and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Snapdragon mobile platforms work with the mandate to accelerate the development of AI use cases such as natural language processing for smartphones and IoT devices. The partnership with Baidu is to support and optimize DuerOS technology on Qualcomm Aqstic hardware and software including: low power voice activation on the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec supporting DuerOS with the activation achieved by uttering the phrase “Xiaodu, Xiaodu”, and echo and noise cancellation for use on the DuerOS device in any environment, which many companies implementing voice-activated technologies have recognized as an issue.
“Through the collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we will bring a new AI voice experience to OEMs of smartphones and IoT devices around the world,” said Kun Jing, general manager, Duer Business Unit, Baidu. “Leveraging Baidu’s strengths in AI, big data, knowledge graph, information and services ecosystems, DuerOS will support OEMs with its strong capabilities, while providing users with more comprehensive and quality information and services to satisfy their needs.”
