Regula has announced comprehensive support for Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) in its latest Document Reader SDK update, implementing features that meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for digital identity verification in travel. The advancement comes as electronic passport technology continues to advance globally, with numerous countries adopting enhanced security features and digital innovations.
The enhanced SDK now supports all three ICAO-defined DTC types: Type 1, which allows travelers to create digital credentials from physical documents; Type 2, which combines digital and physical components with cryptographic linking; and Type 3, which functions as a fully digital credential issued directly by authorities. The comprehensive approach reflects the growing trend toward digital identification solutions that has been observed across various sectors.
The updated software enables organizations to read document RFID chips using smartphones or passport readers to create Virtual Components (DTC-VC), as well as verify these credentials across multiple platforms. The system includes server-side NFC verification to ensure the authenticity of created DTCs, building upon Regula’s established expertise in secure digital verification solutions.
“We see that the world is rapidly moving to embrace digital IDs,” said Ihar Kliashchou, Chief Technology Officer at Regula. “By ensuring full DTC support in the latest update of Regula Document Reader SDK, we are helping our clients to smoothly transition to the future of travel, where secure, digital-first solutions redefine the passenger experience.”
The solution builds upon Regula’s database of over 14,000 identity document templates from 251 countries and territories. The extensive database has been instrumental in supporting secure remote onboarding and verification services across various industries. Integration capabilities allow organizations to incorporate the DTC functionality into existing systems.
Recent market research by Forrester Consulting indicates that 42 percent of businesses globally are implementing digital ID systems, with adoption reaching 50 percent in the aviation sector specifically. The trend aligns with broader initiatives in digital identity verification, as governments and organizations worldwide continue to modernize their identification systems to meet evolving security and convenience requirements.
