Digital identity verification in air travel is undergoing significant transformation, building on years of technological advancement in mobile and digital credentials. Regula, a leading provider of identity verification solutions, has expanded its Document Reader SDK to provide comprehensive support for Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs), encompassing all three types defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The update enables the creation and verification of digital credentials from physical documents, supports hybrid solutions combining digital and physical components, and accommodates fully digital credentials issued by authorities.
The enhanced software allows organizations to use smartphones or passport readers to create Virtual Components (DTC-VC) by reading document RFID chips. The development follows Regula’s ongoing efforts to strengthen mobile-based authentication, as previously demonstrated through their biometric authentication solutions. The system incorporates server-side NFC verification to ensure DTC authenticity across multiple platforms.
In the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Transportation (DOT) have established new deadlines for REAL ID implementation. The requirement for REAL ID-compliant identification for domestic air travel will begin May 7, 2025, with full enforcement expected by May 5, 2027. The timeline corresponds with the TSA’s recent approval of mobile driver’s licenses for identity verification at airports, marking a significant shift toward digital identification methods.
The U.S. Visa Waiver Program continues to facilitate travel for nationals of 43 participating countries through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). The system requires travelers to obtain pre-authorization at a cost of $21, valid for up to two years or until passport expiration. The program parallels similar initiatives worldwide, such as the UK’s expanding Electronic Travel Authorization system.
“We see that the world is rapidly moving to embrace digital IDs. By ensuring full DTC support in the latest update of Regula Document Reader SDK, we are helping our clients to smoothly transition to the future of travel, where secure, digital-first solutions redefine the passenger experience,” said Ihar Kliashchou, Chief Technology Officer at Regula.
“At TSA, digital technology is an integral part of our identity verification framework and improves security efficiency while enhancing the passenger experience,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “This rule demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the passenger experience through secure and privacy-enhancing identity verification, facilitating innovation and honoring the intent of the REAL ID Act.” The TSA has already begun implementing these digital solutions through initiatives like mobile ID support in digital wallets.
