New Samsung Notebook Features Rotating Screen, Biometric Security

January 8, 2018

“Supported by the Windows Hello platform embedded in the Windows 10 operating system, the sensor enables biometric user authentication, offering a considerable security advantage over traditional password-based login.”

Samsung has announced a new notebook device sporting stylus support and biometric security.New Samsung Notebook Features Rotating Screen, Biometric Security

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is its 360-degree rotating screen, which allows the notebook to be folded into a tablet-style format at the user’s preference. Users who purchase a peripheral Active Pen stylus can then use the device for taking notes or doodling, and fold it back into a traditional notebook form when it’s time to get typing.

A more subtle – but very important – feature is the notebook’s embedded fingerprint sensor. Supported by the Windows Hello platform embedded in the Windows 10 operating system, the sensor enables biometric user authentication, offering a considerable security advantage over traditional password-based login. Samsung hasn’t yet revealed the supplier for its fingerprint sensor technology, but Sweden-based Fingerprint Cards provided the sensor model used in Samsung’s Notebook 9 devices launched last month.

It’s another example of the proliferation of fingerprint sensors beyond the mobile device sector and into more consumer devices including laptops. And Samsung will be showcasing the notebook at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show, which runs from January 9th to 12th in Las Vegas.
