Samsung is launching a 5G version of its Galaxy Z Flip smartphone. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is built with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 Plus 5G Mobile Platform, and is expected to debut on August 7 in select markets.
The Flip 5G is the first Samsung smartphone to take advantage of the 865 Plus platform. The phone supports both face and fingerprint recognition, with the latter delivered courtesy of a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor rather than the in-display sensor that Samsung has featured in recent non-foldable phones like the flagship Galaxy S20.
The original Galaxy Z Flip debuted in February, with a free-standing form factor that automatically splits the phone into an upper and a lower screen to make it easier to multitask while watching a video. The newer version boasts all of the same features, and supplements them with the performance and connectivity benefits of 5G technology.
“At Samsung, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to make 5G more accessible to more people,” said Samsung President and Head of Mobile Communications TM Roh. “We are excited to bring next-generation speed and connectivity to the Galaxy Z Flip which further expands our portfolio of 5G devices.”
The Galaxy Z Flip 5G offers 256GB of internal storage. Samsung, meanwhile, is continuing to experiment with new forms of fingerprint authentication. One recent patent application details a biometric authentication system that scans three fingerprints instead of one, while another describes a system that would prevent screen burn when using in-display fingerprint scanners.
