South Dakota is implementing a new Motor Vehicle Division title and registration system called 605Drive, scheduled to launch on February 17, 2025, joining a growing number of U.S. states modernizing their vehicle documentation processes through digital transformation. The initiative follows similar DMV modernization efforts seen in states like Illinois and California, where digital services are becoming increasingly central to motor vehicle administration.
Several county treasurer offices, including the Hughes County Treasurer’s Office and Auditor’s Office, will temporarily close from February 18 to 21, 2025, to facilitate staff training on the new system. Normal operations will resume on February 24, 2025.
During the transition period, vehicle owners will be able to access registration services through county treasurer offices, DMVNow Kiosks, and the new online platform, which will be accessible via the Department of Revenue’s website under “Vehicle Registration and Plates” in the Online Services section. The multi-channel approach reflects a broader trend in government services, where agencies are implementing hybrid solutions that combine traditional in-person services with digital alternatives.
The Department of Revenue advises vehicle owners with February renewal dates to complete their transactions early, as registration renewals will be unavailable between February 14 and 16, 2025, during the system transition.
The implementation is proceeding in three distinct phases. The first phase began on February 7, 2025, when registration renewals became unavailable on mySDCars.gov and DMVNow Kiosks, though county offices continued processing renewals until February 13. The second phase, from February 14 to 16, will temporarily suspend all motor vehicle transactions, including title transfers and lien releases. The final phase begins with the system launch on February 17.
The 605Drive system will maintain some features of the current system while introducing new functionalities through its online platform. The system provides enhanced accessibility for vehicle-related transactions through the Department of Revenue’s website, supporting findings from iProov showing strong public demand for digital DMV services. The modernization effort represents part of a larger national trend toward digital transformation in government services, with state DMVs leading the way in implementing more efficient, user-friendly systems for citizens.
