South Korea-based foundry Dongbu HiTek will supply fingerprint sensors to Chinese electric bus maker BYD, reports Pulse.
The fingerprint sensor developer behind the designs has not been disclosed, but the project appears to reflect growing prominence for Dongbu HiTek. The manufacturer recently upgraded its facilities, allowing for the production of fingerprint sensor chips suitable for smartphones and similar devices; Pulse compares its improved standing to that of CrucialTec and other leading fingerprint sensor manufacturers.
The project also points to the growing importance of biometric technology in the automotive sector. There is an increasing convergence between the IT and automotive sectors with the rise of the smart car, and major car makers are already starting to experiment with integrating biometric identification technologies into their vehicles.
As for Dongbu HiTek’s production for BYD, further details such as volumes and timeline have not yet been disclosed, with Pulse citing an unnamed source in its report.
