Sweden’s Vopy to Launch 100,000 Zwipe-powered Biometric Cards By Year End

February 19, 2021

Sweden's Vopy to Launch 100,000 Zwipe-powered Biometric Cards By Year End

Norway-based Zwipe has found another important partner in its ramp up to biometric payment card commercialization. The company has announced that it has teamed up with Sweden-based Vopy, a provider of digital banking technology and a commercial card issuer.

The partnership will see Vopy issue biometric payment cards featuring the Zwipe Pay ONE fingerprint sensor solution. The cards will then be delivered via Zwipe’s partner network.

The first phase of the effort, beginning in the third quarter of this year, will entail a pilot program. Assuming all goes well, Vopy will aim for an initial commercial launch of 100,000 biometric payment cards in Q4, with another 500,000 to be issued in 2022.

The plans reflect the emerging biometric payment cards market’s broader acceleration toward a large-scale commercialization phase, with France’s BNP Paribas planning a domestic launch of biometric Visa cards this year. For its part, Zwipe emphasizes the energy efficiency and single-chip design of its Zwipe Pay ONE solution, which evidently proved appealing to Vopy.

“Having closely followed Zwipe’s innovations in biometric payments and their global delivery network of card suppliers, our decision to go for Zwipe Pay ONE was a natural one,” explained Vopy CEO Håkan Tollefsen. “We are very excited about our collaboration with Zwipe and we aim to bring our strengthened financial services portfolio to partners in Asia, USA and Europe.”

The news comes after Zwipe’s appointment of three new sales-focused executives toward the end of last year, further highlighting the company’s anticipation of growth in this sector.
