Telefónica is expanding its global deployment of Open Gateway through new partnerships with major technology companies and organizations worldwide. The telecommunications giant has established agreements with over 50 large companies as part of the GSMA-led initiative to transform networks into future-ready platforms, building on the industry-wide effort to standardize network APIs and enhance digital services.
The company has strengthened its collaboration with TikTok, extending their partnership to Europe. The collaboration, announced during MWC 2024, focuses on implementing a streamlined user registration process using the ‘Number Verification’ API, enabling TikTok users to register with their mobile phone numbers without requiring SMS or third-party verification systems. The enhancement builds upon Telefónica’s previous authentication partnerships aimed at enhancing user verification processes.
Telefónica and TikTok are also developing a new “Age Verification” API within the CAMARA framework, incorporating functionalities from existing solutions like ‘Number Verification’ and ‘KYC’ to provide age-appropriate experiences for users. The development comes as social media platforms face increasing pressure worldwide to implement robust age verification systems.
In the mobility sector, Cabify is implementing Telefónica’s Number Verification API to simplify its user registration process, allowing direct registration without additional verification steps. The integration demonstrates a growing trend toward seamless authentication methods in transportation services.
The telecommunications company has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Community of Madrid to advance the digitization of public services across health, transport, justice, and tourism sectors. The initiative aims to enhance internal processes and improve service accessibility for citizens.
Telefónica has also formed strategic partnerships with major cloud providers. The company is establishing an innovation centre with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for developing new SaaS consumer products for telecommunications companies. The centre will provide infrastructure, data storage, and analytics services to support modern management platforms and generative AI applications.
Additionally, Telefónica is collaborating with Google Cloud to integrate Open Gateway into Google Firebase, focusing on enhancing authentication solutions through phone number verification services. The partnership supports the broader industry movement toward more secure authentication methods beyond traditional SMS-based verification.
“We are currently negotiating additional contracts with companies interested in adopting Open Gateway APIs to enhance their digital services,” said Chema Alonso, Chief Digital Officer of Telefónica.
“The collaboration will leverage Telefónica’s expertise in telecommunications data management and analytics to provide anonymous and aggregated consumer information for various vertical markets,” said Ishwar Parulkar, Chief Technologist for Telecom and Edge Cloud at AWS.
