UK Food Delivery Platform Looks to Selfie Biometrics for Driver Onboarding

UK Food Delivery Platform Looks to Selfie Biometrics for Driver Onboarding

UK-based food delivery startup Deliveroo is going to be using Onfido‘s selfie-based biometric authentication technology to verify the identities of its drivers, the companies have announced.

Demand for food delivery has been soaring since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the implementation of various mitigation measures around the world, with consumer visits to restaurants sharply curbed while ordering in has become increasingly popular. With that being the case, Deliveroo has been looking for ways to quickly onboard new drivers.

Onfido’s solution revolves around the use of facial recognition to match end users’ selfie photoes to uploaded images of their identity documents, offering a reliable means of remote identity verification. It’s an ideal solution for a tech-driven firm like Deliveroo, while the partnership presents another opportunity for Onfido to expand its market reach.

“The ability for Deliveroo to meet the demand of its restaurant partners will play a critical role in the sustainability of many restaurants on our high streets over the coming months,” said Onfido CEO Husayn Kassai in a statement announcing the partnership. “We’re delighted to partner with Deliveroo to meet these demands across the world, providing a secure, user-friendly service that helps them quickly onboard new riders.”

The partnership’s announcement arrives on the heels of the news that Kassai had been named 2020 Young Entrepreneur of the Year for London and the East of England in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards. It also comes after the company announced remote onboarding partnerships with Delfin Health and MyCash Money last month.
