The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced plans to implement new secure sign-in options for its online services starting in 2025, offering veterans streamlined access through either Login.gov or ID.me accounts across all VA websites and applications.
The transition marks a significant modernization of the VA’s digital authentication systems. Under the new framework, veterans will need to use either Login.gov or ID.me credentials to access their benefits and healthcare information online. The existing My HealtheVet sign-in option will be discontinued following the introduction of these new authentication methods.
Both authentication options offer robust security features while maintaining accessibility. Login.gov, operated by the General Services Administration, recently expanded its capabilities to include facial recognition technology while maintaining non-biometric alternatives. Similarly, ID.me has adapted its platform to provide both biometric and non-biometric verification methods following its widespread deployment for government services, including its notable implementation with the IRS.
“VA is committed to making it as easy as possible for Veterans to manage their benefits and health care online while protecting their identities and data,” stated the Department of Veterans Affairs in its announcement of the changes.
The new sign-in options support broader federal initiatives to standardize and enhance security for digital government services, including the Federal Zero Trust Strategy that emphasizes strong authentication measures across government platforms. Login.gov provides a single sign-in service that works across multiple federal agencies, while ID.me offers identity verification services widely used in both government and commercial applications.
The changes are scheduled to take effect January 31, 2025. The VA is advising veterans to prepare for the transition by familiarizing themselves with these authentication platforms in advance of the changeover date. The shift represents part of a larger trend in government digital services, as federal agencies increasingly move toward standardized, secure identity verification systems that balance security requirements with user accessibility.
