Vivo is pushing in-display fingerprint recognition in the next smartphone in its flagship product line. The upcoming Vivo X80 Pro features a 3D Ultrasonic Large Fingerprint Sensor that is designed to be more accurate and more user-friendly than other in-display alternatives.
The sensor itself is a 3D Sonic Max sensor from Qualcomm, though Vivo believes that the extra-large deployment is the thing that will truly set the X80 Pro apart. According to Vivo, the wider format speeds up fingerprint capture, and delivers a more accurate result than smaller alternatives.
On that front, Vivo claims that the sensor can register a fingerprint with a single screen press, which dramatically speeds up the activation process. Other phones typically require several presses to register a single print, and most people need to look at their screen to ensure that their finger is actually positioned over the sensor.
The larger format makes it easier to find the sensor without looking, and the better capture enables device unlocks in as little as 0.2 seconds. Users can also adjust the size of the active sensor area once registration is complete. Those who opt for a larger surface area can even set up the phone to require two prints for a standard device unlock. Requiring two simultaneous presses is less convenient, but does offer a much higher level of security.
Beyond the fingerprint sensor, the Vivo X80 Pro features a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, 256 GB of storage, and a quad-camera set-up that combines a 50 MP main sensor and a 48 MP wide sensor with a 12 MP sensor for portraits and an 8 MP periscope camera for a better zoom. The front-facing camera comes in at 32 MP.
The 5G X80 Pro is powered with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, and runs on Funtouch OS 12, which is in turn built atop an Android 12 foundation. Vivo will also release a less robust Vivo X80 model with three rear cameras and a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chip.
Vivo’s emphasis on in-display fingerprint technology is in keeping with its track record. The company was the first to ship a phone with an in-display option back in 2018, and is now trying to improve on that with a phone that can recognize prints even when the screen or the user’s hand is wet.
The Vivo subsidiary iQOO released a 9 Pro smartphone with a 3D Sonic Max sensor earlier this year. Vivo is yet to announce a release date or pricing information for its own X80 Pro.
