Leaked images suggest that Vivo’s next flagship smartphone will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The images appear to show slides from a presentation on an upcoming Vivo device labelled “Xplay 7”. The slides depict a smartphone with small bezels and a large screen, with a circular digital button – possibly depicting a fingerprint shape, though the detail is blurry – near the bottom of the screen.
The images suggest that Vivo is another frontrunner in the race to pioneer in-display fingerprint scanning. While Apple had initially been thought to be at the front of the pack, it appears to have hit some technological stumbling blocks in trying to get its Touch ID system into this year’s new iPhone; meanwhile, forthcoming devices from Samsung and Sharp are expected to feature the technology.
A modified Vivo phone was showing off a prototype of Qualcomm’s in-display fingerprint sensor technology announced at this year’s MWC Shanghai event. But if Qualcomm is indeed providing the technology in question, there is still an issue concerning timing. AndroidHeadlines speculates that the Vivo Xplay 7 will launch in Q4 of this year, but at MWC Shanghai Qualcomm had said its in-display sensors wouldn’t be available for sampling until Q4, which would make for a pretty tight production schedule for Vivo if it does plan to ship the Xplay 7 by the end of the year.
