West Virginia Expands Mobile Driver’s License Program with Samsung Wallet Integration

West Virginia has expanded its mobile driver’s license program by integrating the West Virginia Mobile ID into Samsung Wallet, through a collaboration between IDEMIA Public Security and the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The expansion follows the successful nationwide TSA approval of West Virginia’s mobile driver’s license program in late 2023.

The integration enables West Virginia residents to store their IDEMIA-produced mobile IDs in Samsung Wallet, allowing identity verification at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints equipped with second-generation biometric credential authentication technology (CAT-2) scanners. Users can access their mobile ID by either tapping their phone near a mobile ID reader or having the reader scan a QR code. The implementation mirrors similar successful deployments in other states like Georgia, where Samsung Wallet integration has enhanced digital ID accessibility.

Residents maintain the option to access their mobile ID through the free West Virginia Mobile ID app, which IDEMIA launched in December 2024. The West Virginia Mobile ID currently functions at select TSA checkpoints and does not replace physical licenses or identification cards, though acceptance is expected to expand as more locations adopt the technology. The TSA’s ongoing deployment of CAT-2 terminals across U.S. airports indicates growing support for digital identification methods.

The system uses biometric authentication technology to ensure personal information can only be accessed and shared with user consent. The security measure is part of IDEMIA’s broader efforts in digital identity protection, including their recent partnerships to enhance digital identity verification for high-security facilities. The integration represents part of a broader initiative to streamline interactions between residents and service providers, as more states across the U.S. embrace digital identification solutions.
