Yubico has announced that the Yubico Login for Windows application is now available to the general public. The platform provides strong multi-factor authentication for local accounts on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 computers, and can be configured for as many as 10 individual users.
The app arrives in its official form six months after Yubico’s initial public preview, which generated feedback that will allow the company to make improvements to the platform in the future. At the moment, Yubico Login for Windows is only compatible with local accounts, and cannot be used to protect Azure Active Directory accounts, Active Directory accounts, or Microsoft email accounts with Outlook, Hotmail, or Live.com.
The traditional YubiKey is still an option for those interested in passwordless authentication for those other accounts. Yubico gave away free YubiKeys to promote Microsoft’s Azure AD public preview, offering a show of support as part of an ongoing partnership with Microsoft.
Yubico recently released a new iOS security key with a Lightning connector, and also named Wendy Spies as its SVP of New Business. Spies joined the company after a prior stop at Microsoft, and is being asked to facilitate the development of Yubico’s YubiHSM line of products.
