Yubico is expanding its YubiKey 5 Series with the release of the new YubiKey 5C NFC security key. As the name would suggest, the YubiKey 5C NFC offers both USB-C and NFC connectivity, making it one of the most flexible security keys currently on the market.
On that front, the YubiKey 5C NFC can be used with any computer or mobile device with USB-C and/or near-field communications (NFC) capabilities. The key itself is compatible with iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, and Linux platforms, and supports the use of smart cards and major authentication protocols like FIDO2, PIV, OpenPGP, and OATH-HOTP and OATH-TOTP.
According to Yubico, that broad utility makes the YubiKey 5C NFC particularly well-suited to a remote work environment, in which the same device is often being used for both personal and professional applications. The YubiKey device can help guard against the vulnerability that that creates because it can protect everything from email clients, password managers, and social media to more sensitive corporate collaboration tools.
In that regard, Yubico has repeatedly warned that phishing attacks are on the rise since the onset of COVID-19.
“The way that people work and go online is vastly different today than it was a few years ago, and especially within the last several months,” said Yubico Chief Product Officer Guido Appenzeller. “Users are no longer tied to just one device or service, nor do they want to be. The YubiKey 5C NFC is compatible with a majority of modern-day computers and mobile phones and works well across a range of legacy and modern applications.”
The YubiKey 5C NFC will start at a $55 price point. It is also available through the company’s new YubiEnterprise Subscription and YubiEnterprise Delivery services, which will make it easier for large organizations to update their existing YubiKeys, and to distribute new YubiKeys to remote employees.
