New leaks have emerged about the next Nexus smartphone. Coming from a fairly reliable industry source, the leaks suggest that the Huawei Nexus will feature a fingerprint sensor, a 5.7″ QHD screen, and a Snapdragon 820 processor.
While none of these details have officially been confirmed, the suggestion that the device will feature a fingerprint sensor makes a lot of sense, given the explosion of this technology in the mobile sector over the last year or so, thanks in large part to the iPhone’s pioneering Touch ID system. And it’s going to be an even more desirable feature after the Android M operating system launches this summer, given that the OS sports native fingerprint sensor capabilities built into its API. Moreover, with all major mPayment systems relying largely on biometric technology for secure authentication such a system is going to be all the more important.
What’s a bit unexpected is the 5.7″ display, which is actually a reduction in screen size from the 6″ display of the Nexus 6. Larger screen sizes have been something of a hot trend lately, with Samsung and Apple both seeing major sales benefits from the big-screen versions of their flagship mobile devices. So it’s a bit odd for a major smartphone maker to then run against that trend, but possibly Huawei has done some research indicating an upcoming reversal and is simply being fashion-forward. Or maybe it’s just a compromise between the bigger and smaller sizes; after all, consumers still buy the smaller version of the iPhone.
The new Nexus comes out in Q4 of this year, so there’s lots of time for Huawei to confirm these details.
