Apple says that it’s making good progress in clearing the backlog of Apple Watch orders, and that some models of the smartwatches will be available in stores in a couple of weeks. It’s also going to start selling the wearable devices in Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Mexico, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland.
It’s welcome progress in the ongoing saga of the Apple Watch rollout. The lack of in-store availability (save for a few luxury shops) at the smartwatch’s official launch was cause for consternation and speculation, with rumors eventually surfacing that Apple was struggling to meet production demands due to a hardware defect. Others suggested that Apple was merely being cautious in testing the waters of market demand, given the novelty (in relative terms) of the device.
Many analysts have suggested that the Apple Watch would help to drive the burgeoning wearables market forward, with rival smartwatch makers expected to benefit from the popularizing effects of the device’s success. It’s too early to say whether the smartwatch has been the runaway success so many were expecting, but sales do appear to be going well, and may even have prompted Samsung to postpone the release of its own smartwatch to avoid direct competition.
