ARTIK Chip Line Brings Some Standards to the IoT

May 13, 2015

ARTIK Chip Line Brings Some Standards to the IoTSamsung has unveiled a major new product line at this year’s Internet of Things (IoT) World conference. In his keynote address, Samsung Chief Strategy Officer Young Sohn unveiled the ARTIK line of IoT chips.

According to Shara Tibken at CNET, the chip family will include three variations: ARTIK 1, ARTIK 5, and ARTIK 10. While each one offers its own technological specialization, the overall aim of the chip family is to provide the building blocks – in terms of comprehensive silicon infrastructure – for IoT devices. They’ll run on an open platform, via SmartThings Open Cloud (which Samsung acquired last fall), allowing developers a relatively quick and easy route for making their ideas a reality.

As we reported yesterday, AllSeen Alliance member Sansa Security will be providing the security apparatus for the ARTIK line via its Trust as a Service (TaaS) platform. This should help ensure a stable security environment for all devices built on the ARTIK platform. And that should come as a relief to experts who have been calling for more established standards in the IoT field. In fact, the ARTIK line is very much what Todd Greene was calling for in a recent VentureBeat article; indeed, his assertion, “Budgets and time-to-market are becoming key drivers, and vendors can’t afford to design and build everything from scratch,” may have proven prescient already as Samsung puts its tools out there for the whole tech world to use.
