“There has been some indication since the Note7 fiasco that Samsung intends to continue integrating iris scanning in future devices…”
Samsung will announce the official results of its investigation into what caused some of its Galaxy Note7 devices to catch fire on January 23rd, and as The Korea Times reports, it’s widely expected to cite a flawed battery as the primary cuprit.
It is perhaps worth noting that Samsung performed a total recall on its Note7 smartphones after the initial reports of some devices catching fire. Samsung’s replacement devices presumably had new battery components, but reports of the fire hazard persisted until the device was ultimately scrapped altogether, costing the company billions.
Its official report will be issued even as other bodies like the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards continue independent investigations.
What is widely considered not to be under suspicion is the Note7’s iris scanner, a pioneering feature that was highly publicized ahead of the Note7’s launch. There has been some indication since the Note7 fiasco that Samsung intends to continue integrating iris scanning in future devices, and a new report from GSMArena suggests that the feature will be included in the anticipated Galaxy S8 device, along with sophisticated camera technology.
