Iris Scanning Nearly Confirmed for Samsung Galaxy S8

January 26, 2017

“…the iris scanning will pick up where the failed Note7 left off, fulfilling Samsung’s vision of becoming the pioneer of mobile iris scanning…”

The Samsung Galaxy S8 will have an iris scanner that can be used for biometric phone unlocking and transaction verification, reports The Guardian.

Iris Scanning Nearly Confirmed for Samsung Galaxy S8It’s something close to a confirmation of speculation that emerged in the wake of Samsung’s Note7 fiasco, but ebbed as recent reports focused on the full-front display and rear-mounted fingerprint sensor anticipated for the device. The Guardian cites unnamed sources in its report, but asserts that it “believes their information to be correct at the time of publication” and that it “has double sourced all claims”.

Among those other claims: The aforementioned rear-mounted sensor and full-size display, which will have curved edges like the Samsung S7 Edge; a new Snapdragon 835 processor; 64GB of storage; a new AI assistant; and new accessories that could be used to turn the device into something like a desktop computer.

Meanwhile, the iris scanning will pick up where the failed Note7 left off, fulfilling Samsung’s vision of becoming the pioneer of mobile iris scanning, just as Apple had done with fingerprint scanning on its iPhone.
