Microsoft has launched a new version of its Outlook email and calendar service, and the upgrade further extends the company’s growing commitment to biometric security.
In addition to user interface enhancements to its events functions, the app now offers Touch ID support on iOS devices. That means iPhone and iPad users can set up biometric access control for their Outlook accounts, requiring a fingerprint scan to open the app.
It’s another example of Microsoft’s enthusiasm for biometric security, with the company’s latest offerings system, Windows 10, featuring native biometric authentication capabilities via its Windows Hello security apparatus. The company has also released smartphones and peripheral devices embracing this kind of biometric security in recent months.
Now, the trend comes full circle, with Microsoft enabling support for the fingerprint authentication system that most helped to pioneer biometric authentication on consumer electronics—Apple’s Touch ID.
