Siri Knows About Sports, Will Help You With The TV

October 28, 2016

“Siri will also be able to stream live feeds from other apps on command, so if a user says ‘Put on BBC News’, the video will play through the TV App.”

While Apple’s big announcement about a fingerprint-scanning Macbook Pro is taking much of the tech spotlight this week, the company also has a big new development on the TV front in the form a new app called the TV App.Siri Knows About Sports, Will Help You With The TV

It’s designed to aggregate users’ media content into one place and to streamline the viewing experience. For example, when one episode of a TV show ends, the next will be queued as “Up Next”; and it will also offer Recommended programs.

Siri is going to play an important role in this. The latest version of Apple’s voice-based AI assistant is now aware of live sports events, and can respond to users’ questions about what’s on and commands like ‘Put on the World Series game.’ Siri will also be able to stream live feeds from other apps on command, so if a user says ‘Put on BBC News’, the video will play through the TV App.

It’s yet another example of Apple’s determination to put Siri at the center of the connected home, and to make voice interaction the primary interface. The company is also rumored to be working on bringing more sophisticated biometrics to Siri so that it could one day recognize not only a user’s voice but also her face, but if true that is further down the road. The TV App, meanwhile, will launch this December.
