Microsoft Edge, the new browser that comes with the Windows 10 operating system, is further extending the reach of its Windows Hello biometric security platform. And USAA, the military-focused financial services organization, will be among the first to take advantage of it.
The Edge upgrade was announced at Microsoft’s annual Build conference among a slew of other developments related to Redstone, the big OS update for Windows 10. With the upgrade – also called the Windows Anniversary Update – Edge will let users access participating web services via biometric authentication. That means they can scan their fingerprints on products such as the Surface Pro 4 Type Cover, or they can authenticate via iris scan using compatible machines such as a Lumia 950 smartphone.
For those familiar with USAA, its early involvement will come as no surprise. The company has been eager to test out new technologies such as biometric authentication, which it has made available for login on its mobile app through multiple modalities. And as it continues its pioneering efforts, it should help Windows Hello to further increase the popularity of biometric authentication in the mass market of consumer electronics.
