China-based consumer electronics company ZTE is once again taking aim at high-end rivals with its newest flagship smartphone, the ZTE Axon Elite. The company announced the device’s international launch at this week’s IFA 2015 trade show in Berlin.
The ZTE Axon Elite is already available in China and the US; now, the company is planning to roll it out in parts of Europe and Asia this fall. Priced at €419.99, the Axon is clearly targeting the upper end of the price spectrum, where rivals like the iPhone and the latest Samsung Galaxy devices reside. But it isn’t just the price speaking to that ambition: The device sports 32GB of storage, expandable by 128GB via a microSD card; dual track, hi-fi sound recording; dual rear cameras for hi-res video recording; and Corning Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass.
Perhaps most notably, the device also features multimodal biometric capabilities, with fingerprint and eye scanning built in alongside voice control functionality. As fingerprint sensors have increasingly become standard features on mid- and high-end mobile devices, the embrace of multimodal capabilities could add extra appeal to the device, particularly as mPayment platforms beyond Apple Pay start to launch and take advantage of biometric authentication.
