Austria has introduced a fully digital proof of identity within its digital ID wallet app, ‘eAusweise.’
Announced last week by Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner and State Secretary for Digitalization Claudia Plakolm, the new digital ID is the latest in a series of digital identity solutions developed by youniqx Identity, a subsidiary of the Austrian State Printing House (OSD).
The digital ID is now recognized as equivalent to traditional ID methods within Austria, and allows individuals to present their ID digitally to third parties, private individuals, and law enforcement authorities.
The ID includes the holder’s first name, last name, date of birth, and portrait picture, adhering to data minimization principles and GDPR standards.
The initiative aligns with the European Digital Identity Framework Regulation, eIDAS 2.0, and is fully compliant with ISO 18013-5. Since its initial launch in late 2022, the ‘eAusweise’ app has seen over one million digital documents activated, reflecting the growing acceptance of digital ID solutions in Austria.
“Our recent accomplishments show that we can deliver what is needed for successful statewide digitization,” said youniqx CEO Helmut Lackner. “For us at youniqx Identity, this is an invaluable foundation for upcoming supranational EUDI solutions.”
youniqx Identity has also extended its digital identity solutions to the Principality of Liechtenstein, demonstrating its capability to support statewide digitization and future supranational EUDI solutions.
The news follows an announcement earlier this month that the go.eIDAS Association had launched the eIDAS-Testbed to support the implementation of the European Digital Identity Framework. Developed in collaboration with partners such as C&S Computer und Software GmbH, the Eclipse Foundation, and the eco Association, the eIDAS-Testbed aims to facilitate the deployment of European Digital Identity Wallets (EUDIW) for all EU citizens by 2026.
