“I’m more confident than ever that biometric smart cards are poised for mass adoption.” – Stan Swearingen, CEO, IDEX Biometrics
IDEX Biometrics announced today that biometric payment cards featuring its SmartFinger sensor technology have begun a certification process on behalf of a “major global payment scheme in Asia.” The Bank Card Testing Center, an independent third-party certification service in Beijing, is conducting the process, which it is expected to complete in third quarter 2019.
“This adds to the growing list of global payment schemes certifying biometric smart cards with IDEX technology,” said Stan Swearingen, CEO of IDEX Biometrics. “I’m more confident than ever that biometric smart cards are poised for mass adoption.”
SmartFinger fingerprint technologies boast high image fidelity and security, designed for use in real world conditions.
In addition to fitting into the ongoing trend toward biometric payment cards worldwide, IDEX’s certification news is yet another indication of its focus on the Asian payments market, which is primed for the new personal finance form factor.
In a recent interview with FindBiometrics, Swearingen commented on the cultural factors stoking the Asian market for next-gen cards.
“Culturally they accept new technology readily, and I think an example is when you look at online payments, like WeChat Pay in China,” he said. “In other parts of the planet, online payments are not picking up. Uptake is around five-to-six percent, and that is with a lot of promotion, and actually in some regions it is in decline. But in China they readily accept that payment method, which demonstrates their culture is very open to adopting new technologies”
The certification news comes on the heels of IDEX Biometrics’ partnership with secure element specialist Tongxin Microelectronics Co., which is also based in Beijing.
